Use environmental data to compare products
Compare products with confidence
Making informed sustainability decisions starts with having access to clear, reliable environmental data. Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs), Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and Environmental Profiles (EPs) help you understand and compare the environmental performance of construction products on a like-for-like basis.
By providing transparent, verified information, they support more confident specification decisions and help you align projects with sustainability goals, carbon reduction targets and reporting requirements. We use LCAs, EPDs and EPs to communicate the environmental performance of our products in a clear, consistent and independently verified way.
Understanding Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs)
A Life Cycle Assessment is the starting point for understanding a product’s environmental impact, as it evaluates performance across the full lifecycle—from raw material extraction and transport to manufacturing and, where relevant, end-of-life treatment.
To ensure consistency and credibility, All LCAs are carried out in accordance with internationally recognized standards, including ISO 14040 and ISO 14044. Because LCAs contain detailed and often commercially sensitive information, they are not typically published directly. Instead, the results are used to create independently verified environmental reporting documents such as EP or EPDs that make this information accessible and useful.
Understanding Environmental Profiles (EPs)
Environmental Profiles provide independently verified environmental data for individual products, based on their Life Cycle Assessment results. Developed in accordance with Construction products specific LCA standard EN 15804, they help you understand the environmental performance of a specific product and compare options with confidence.
EPs use the same underlying methodology, system boundaries and third-party verification principles as Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), ensuring the environmental information is robust, credible and consistent. The key difference is that Environmental Profiles are not typically published through public EPD programme operators or databases, and therefore do not follow the additional publication and programme requirements associated with ISO 14025.
Understanding Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs)
Environmental Product Declarations are publicly available, independently verified documents that communicate the environmental impact of a product or product group. Like Environmental Profiles, they are based on Life Cycle Assessment data and follow recognized standards, including EN 15804.
EPDs present environmental impacts using standardized metrics, making it easier to compare products on a like-for-like basis. Typical indicators include:
- Global Warming Potential (GWP), expressed as kg CO₂ equivalent
- Additional environmental impact categories required by the relevant standard
- For selected markets, indicators such as the Environmental Cost Indicator (ECI/MKI).
Having an EPD does not automatically mean a product is more environmentally friendly than an alternative. Instead, EPDs provide a consistent and transparent basis for comparison. When products are assessed using the same functional unit and impact categories, this enables meaningful "like-for-like" comparisons to support specification, sustainability and reporting decisions.
Helping make construction more transparent
Environmental Profiles and Environmental Product Declarations provide construction professionals with visibility into the environmental footprint of products and projects. These insights help construction teams:
- reduce embodied carbon
- support sustainability targets
- contribute toward BREEAM and LEED certifications
- improve supply chain transparency
- strengthen sustainability reporting and tender submissions.
Wavin’s commitment to transparent data
Making sustainable product choices starts with access to clear, reliable environmental information. That’s why we develop Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and Environmental Profiles (EPs) across our product portfolio, helping customers make more informed decisions.
We already publish EPDs and Environmental Profiles (EP summaries) for a significant proportion of our product portfolio, making this information available through our website and publicly accessible EPD platforms. This gives you easy access to trusted environmental data when comparing products, evaluating sustainability performance and supporting project reporting requirements.
We're continuing to expand the availability of EPDs across our European portfolio and plan to extend this approach across our global product range over time.
Depending on the level of lifecycle detail required, we offer three types of EPD depending on the level of lifecycle detail required:
- Cradle-to-gate: covers raw materials, transport and manufacturing processes.
- Cradle-to-gate with options: includes manufacturing alongside end-of-life treatment scenarios.
- Cradle-to-grave: covers the full product lifecycle, including maintenance and end-of-life stages.
External EPD platforms
Depending on the country and market, Wavin EPDs may also be available through recognized external platforms, including:
- Private databases: EPD Global / EPD International
- National databases: The Nationale Milieu Database (NMD) (Netherlands) / INIES (France)
- Construction product data pools in Nordic countries.
