EPDs: prove you consider sustainability when you choose products
Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are one of the most requested additions to the construction sector’s sustainability toolkit. Wavin launched an infographic explaining all details of EPDs and LCAs. The infographic can be downloaded below.
A recognized measure of sustainability
Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are one of the most requested additions to the construction sector’s sustainability toolkit. EPDs are standardized reports detailing a product's environmental impact. They’re created using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology, which tracks all product stages — from raw material extraction to transport, manufacturing, application and end-of-life use, including recycling potential. These metrics are then captured against key performance categories, such as CO2 emissions, to give a comprehensive overview of a product’s carbon footprint.
EPDs will reshape construction’s approach to sustainability
Sustainability initiatives should be backed by scientific, quantifiable evidence to deliver credibility and prove their value. EPDs are ideal for this. They offer transparent, objective information about products’ carbon footprints, water footprints, and energy consumption to support smart sustainability decisions, particularly in specifying and purchasing. They can even help calculate lifecycle operating costs and ensure compliance with external targets.
Because EPD calculations are tightly controlled and their reporting uses a standardized format, they’re also a reliable way of assessing and comparing products' environmental impacts. Using EPDs to compare products directly is a credible way to prioritize ‘green’ building materials that can contribute credits towards green building certifications such as BREEAM or LEED.
Use EPDs to drive your business forward
An EPD-based specification and product selection approach is a positive differentiator in today’s market. In addition to helping to reduce CO2 footprints on construction projects, EPDs are a positive way to raise your organization’s profile and demonstrate your environmental commitments. Sustainability accreditations like these can also support tender bids. Developers who want to stay competitive need to prioritize EPDs in their supply chain. So, specifiers should liaise with manufacturers who provide EPDs specific to the product they’re considering, ensuring they select the most sustainable options for their projects.
Our commitment to sustainability
Manufacturing products with the lowest possible environmental impact is at the heart of our purpose, and sharing our products’ impact metrics is a priority. This commitment means we’ve invested in EPDs for years, working with LCA software company Ecochain to create EPDs for our European product portfolio. These EPDs are externally verified and valid for five years. In 2025, we’ll build on this progress by rolling out EPDs for our entire global portfolio.
